Being Amazonian

Being Amazonian, the tag line on all 3 Don’t Sell books. I’m often asked what it means. It sounds a tad pretentious, which for those of you who know me, will understand that without any explanation, but if you have ever been curious, hopefully this blog gives you the answer.

Being Amazonian, the tag line on all 3 Don’t Sell books. I’m often asked what it means. It sounds a tad pretentious, which for those of you who know me, will understand that without any explanation, but if you have ever been curious, hopefully this blog gives you the answer.

There is a real message behind the words. When I initially started writing Don’t Sell Volume 1, I was inspired to do so because of the obsession I had with online shopping and how it was developing on a daily basis to become more intuitive when browsing web shops. Amazon, as the biggest platform was intriguing because it dealt with initial requests and then used the algorithms (those things that are too clever for their own good) to recommend other items that were similar, or goods that had been purchased by others when browsing the particular purchase I was thinking of making. Alongside that, there was always reviews and feedback which took me deeper into the world of online shopping without thinking about it.

IT ALL HAPPENED INTUITIVELY.

That was the catalyst, and then I thought about how hairdressers and barbers are very intuitive in most of their daily working life. After the initial consultation, intuition kicks in and the service is carried out with ease, and yet when a decision is made to ‘sell’ a product, the approach changes and most stylists become insecure sales people who  stutter and stumble through a sales pitch, in most cases, nothing intuitive happens.

So that then led me to thinking about how to encourage hairdressers and barbers to become more intuitive and talk about products in a natural, engaging manner., and this is where the pretentious aspect of the tag line comes into its own …. bear with me!

When a stylist recommends a product to a client and gets the response they don’t want to hear – NO THANKS, it’s like a brick wall that they don’t attempt to get past with the rest of their clients for the remainder of the day.

I likened this scenario to an Amazonian Warrior who heads out on a morning to get breakfast. When the warrior sees whatever animal they intend to kill for brekkie, the spear is thrown and it’s either success or failure. if it’s failure, the warrior doesn’t give up, go home and let everyone starve. NO, they pick up the spear and head off to find the next potential breakfast, and they won’t give up until they have been successful. They do this because it’s in their DNA, they have to achieve their goal each and every day.

IT ALL HAPPENS INTUITIVELY.

The warrior doesn’t accept failing, they don’t give up, they move on to the next opportunity, and that’s what hairdressers and barbers have to do. For every client that says NO there is one who will say YES, but only if they are given the opportunity to say so.

IT NEEDS TO HAPPEN INTUITIVELY.

Ultimately, the sub line, Being Amazonian is all about helping the hairdressing and barbering community to talk about products to their client without having to think about selling something.

BEING AMAZONIAN, BEING INTUITIVE, JUST LIKE AMAZON’S ALGORITHMS AND AMAZONIAN WARRIORS.

(I did say it was a tad pretentious, but it does say what it needs to say)

Drawing on personal experiences, salon business and the challenges sales people face in their daily life,
I’ve created a story that can be used in salons and on sales calls that will help overcome the challenges faced in the world of retailing.
