I’ve just been asked (via a DM on Facebook) a question ….. ‘what do you do’? It made me chuckle to myself as I’ve always thought it was obvious, but the reality is it’s only obvious to anyone who might know me.

A few years ago my website was called emilthecaretaker and someone asked me what it meant. It brought about a change of name to the one this site now operates  under … emilmcmahon.com because I felt that might make more sense.

And yet some people still don’t know what it is I actually do, which is fair play as, unless you read any blogs here, if your only representation of me is the endless selfies shared across socials, then just exactly what do I do?

The question made me take a long hard look at my social world and it brought me to this conclusion. The website and blog (this) definitely shares some of the stuff I do, not enough, but some. FB, Insta, X and even TikTok seem to be missing key information. Once upon a time there was a fine blend of work related and personal posts, but it has shifted to being more personal, not great when you rely on social networks to spread your message, and even worse when you advocate a fine blend of both to customers.

Time for a rethink, less selfies ….. gulp, even this made me wake up as this is the latest post on Instagram!

It’s time to start sharing more information about what it is that I do actually do!

Here’s a brief overview:

  1. Training for salons, product companies, sales and education teams.
  2. Develop training materials for product companies.
  3. Test and review products.
  4. Manage social media platforms for businesses.
  5. Educate salons about social media usage.
  6. Blog (frequently).
  7. Write articles for trade magazines.
  8. Create graphics for salons.
  9. Blog and E-blast for businesses.
  10. Fight the fight for salon professional product companies.
  11. Present on stage at industry events.
  12. Write books (No.4 is a possibility).
  13. Offer one-to-one business support to salon owners.
  14. Share business advice across social media platforms.

As a summary that more or less covers everything I do, but looking at my socials, it’s not being shared in the way it should be. Time to get that sorted.

Thank you to the person who asked ‘what is it you do?’ – hopefully this answers that.

Drawing on personal experiences, salon business and the challenges sales people face in their daily life,
I’ve created a story that can be used in salons and on sales calls that will help overcome the challenges faced in the world of retailing.
