CHANGE IS GOOD: Over the last few weeks I have had numerous people contact me worried about their salon business, not just their retail (for obvious reasons) but also their colour business. One person told me that they had recently returned from a holiday in Mykonos and was shocked to see their ‘professional’ colour available in a chemist for anyone to purchase. Whether this eventually happens here in the UK, who knows, but what I do know is that I’m being asked, more than ever, about moving away from a trusted supplier and is change a good idea?

CHANGE IS GOOD for so many different reasons, and in the current climate it offers new hope to disillusioned salons across the land. First and foremost, change gives everyone something new to talk about, and the experience of seeing something new in the salon creates curiosity from clients and staff. Change gives you the opportunity to look at your business with fresh eyes, do you want to be part of the mass brigade or stand out from the crowd and offer something unique, more personalised and most definitely ‘PROFESSIONAL’.

CHANGE IS GOOD because retail sales are important to your overall business model and a successful brand or two that can only be found in salons can boost sales without much effort from anyone. This happens because both clients and staff are curious, excited, and wanting to experience something new together. New products can reignite the passion for recommending products, and if your salon has a smorgasbord (one of my favourite words) of products that suit every hair and scalp type, and every budget then chances are your retail will organically increase.

CHANGE IS GOOD for your colour as well. Almost every person who colours hair falls into a colour rut, picking up the same tubes time and time again, tubes that have been expertly blended to eliminate the worry and thought process; tubes that create generic results each and every time for each and every client. There’s nothing wrong with that but it takes away the creative process and the need to use the hard earned skills of becoming a colour expert, it also does nothing for the ‘bespoke’ aspect of in-salon colour services. A new colour range gives hairdressers the chance to explore and develop new personalised colours for their clientele. Ultimately, so long as depth and tone is understood, a new numbering system and an idea about the underlying warm and cool characteristics of a new range are all that’s needed to get up and running.

CHANGE IS GOOD in your salon simply because it creates a new buzz, a new vibe for everyone. Getting to know new products and how they perform is a real energiser for us all, and once the initial fear factor of losing ‘my favourite shade’  ‘my favourite shampoo’ ‘my favourite styling product’ disappears, a newfound energy and excitement creates afresh approach in how to promote services and products.

CHANGE IS GOOD, and with the current mood of hairdressers up and down the country, for me, it seems that CHANGE is most definitely on the cards for lots of PROFESSIONAL salons.
