We have reached a pivotal point in the world of professional haircare. Late last year when the migration to mass market began by some of the industry giants, I stated that this was going to be the tip of the iceberg. I have been proven correct.

One big company is now pushing their home colour equipment that has been designed to give ‘salon quality’ colour at home. It’s the next step in taking business away from salons, no matter what people might say about it being ideal as a ‘top up’ in between salon visits, no matter what people say about the natural progression for clients who want to embrace new technologies, the fact is, if clients can achieve ‘salon quality’ colour at home, why bother going to a salon, because, as much as the service, the one to one interaction and the experience counts, they don’t count as much as saving big bucks on their colour if it is going to exactly the same as the salon versions.

Of course the piece of kit is going to be expensive initially which might put some people off, and it might well turn out to be not quite as effective as a salon expert colouring hair, only time will tell with this issue.

But, the change is happening, and it’s the manufacturers that are bringing [it] to the mass market place.

Fortunately there are (as I say in lots of posts) a myriad of product companies out there that support salons and create ‘salon professional’ brands that clients can’t get in mass market outlets, not just retail, but also hair colour, colours that your clients cannot replicate at home with a piece of equipment.

It’s your turn now to change the direction of that ‘pivotal point’ and ditch colours that are available as similar shades in supermarkets and chemists, especially that big chemist; you know, the one that has a ‘colour expert’ recommending which colour for your clients to use on their hair at home, available in the store!!

The future of hairdressing  has to be more bespoke, more specialised and individual, and that one to one service and experience becomes a valuable add on, not an attempt to beat the mass market. Service and quality experiences are crucial as an overall element of the salon visit, add to that the exclusivity of a true salon professional brand and your business will thrive.
