What will you do when….. your colour house decides to look at alternative business models? Imagine the situation, you have been using a major colour from a European company that suddenly decides to go mainstream with their brand that you have trusted for years! It reads like an impossible ‘that will never happen’ statement, but a couple of years ago the same could have been said about care and style products, and we all know what happened there!
There is already a slight shift with one company promising ‘salon colour results’ at home, and whilst this is still relatively new, and expensive to initially buy into, nonetheless it has the potential to appeal to your clients. There is already a ‘colour expert’ in that well know chemist who can give advice about home colourants, and whilst home colours (box colours) have always been around, the fact that there is now the chance to get a recommendation from someone in store is new, and potentially dangerous.
I think it’s fair to say that both of these new approaches are companies dipping their toes in the water to see what ripples are caused, and if they are big enough, then the tsunami will follow. Oh, and if you ever wander into a chemist store whilst abroad, it’s quite common place to see brands that are considered professional here in the UK, openly available on the shelves.
So what should you do? It’s simple really, find a brand that is truly dedicated to the salon professional, a brand that delivers results that you can trust without worrying that your clients might be tempted to replicate it at home. As with retail, there is a myriad of opportunities for you to explore, with ranges that are compact and concise, affordable, creative and most definitely salon exclusive.
‘But my team will be scared, they don’t like change’ I hear salon owners saying! Honestly, there is nothing to be scared of, changing colour is not as frightening as some might think. We can say thanks to product companies for sharing such in-depth knowledge about colour, depths and tones, mixing, colour correction, creative cocktailing etc. All of that invaluable education means that stylists and technicians are able to make the change without worrying too much. Of course finding replacements for favourite shades is a bit daunting, but in reality it’s just like going to the dispensary and finding the shade wanted wasn’t in stock, so you go ahead and recreate it using your skills.
Of course the ‘what will happen when’ moment might be years away, then again, it could be just about to happen.
If you would like to discuss alternative colour ranges, I am , as always, happy to offer my help.
