I watched with interest a big hairdressing event that happened recently. It was magnificent, obviously a lot of money spent on making customers feel really special; demonstrations, product launches, partying, this event had it all! Isn’t it wonderful that suppliers spoil and pamper their salon customers!
After watching lots of TikTok, Instagram and Facebook posts from the company and their clients, and spotting every now and again, presentations about products that are freely available in mass market channels, 🤬 it made me think about the soapbox posts shared here over the last 18 months.
In a world where we constantly hear that the world of hairdressing is in serious trouble unless there is a change of approach to the basic business model I find it incredulous that salons have simply bowed down and accepted what happened to their retail offering.
There are big challenges that need addressing:
- Yes, we need to accept that taking on apprentices is proving challenging. Click here: HJI
- Yes we must accept that the hikes in N.I and minimum wages are a worry that has to be addressed. Click here: NHBF
- Yes, we have to accept that co-working spaces are now as much a part of the playing field as salons with full employed staff. NOTE: Gen Z want to work and want security of employment and a monthly salary ☑️
Each of those three points, whilst naturally causing concern, can be addressed with very specific actions, and fortunately there are organisations in the hairdressing world that are actively looking at new approaches to each of them, and they are much more savvy in the methods to take to help than I can ever be.
RETAIL has to be included as a challenge that needs addressing.
From a retail perspective, there is something salons can do with minimal effort. CHANGE!! If ever penny is a prisoner, then surely the fact that certain products are available in mass market channels with a constant stream of offers attached to them, means, alongside all the other worries owners have, losing retail sales has to be addressed.
There are so many fabulous brands in the world of haircare, brand that set salons apart from competitors, especially when trying to compete with those big companies that are able to offer exceptionally attractive deals for consumers in mass market channels.
For details of companies that I believe offer that much needed point of difference to your business, get in touch for unbiased recommendations. Everything you can do to increase your bottom line has to be of benefit, so make that change and set yourself and your business apart from the masses.
Ask yourself the question, IF NOT NOW, WHEN??
