It’s words that most of us don’t use in our daily working life, but the actual meaning could help salons retail more successfully. This [category heuristics] is something that big retailers, supermarkets, chemists, dept stores and other shops use successfully.
What does it actually mean?
Category heuristics are classed as ‘mental shortcuts‘ that consumers use to very quickly decide about products and (or) information that get classified into groups to help make decisions quickly without thinking too much about them.
For example: When a store classifies something as a best seller, this is seen as a ‘surface level cue’ …. it’s a best seller so it must be good!
Interestingly, the human brain has the ability to categorise products almost on first impression as being budget, mid range, luxury, organic etc, all within the first few seconds of looking at them.
Logo’s, easy to see pricing, recognised marketing all help in consumers making decisions about products. This has potential to be great news when thinking about a retail environment in a salon as creating a wide range of retail products at different price points with recognisable or aesthetically pleasing packaging helps the decision process for clients.
There are lots of positives, but as with everything in life, there are some negatives about heuristics that have to be thought through. Leading retail experts refer to the downside as ‘the messy middle‘ and it is particularly relevant to online shopping. With an absolute explosion of products the decision process can be affected significantly. the clearest example of this (as far as I can see) is the plethora of South Korean skincare products available via the TikTok shop, each promising amazing results with lots of brands at exceptionally cheap price points. The confusion consumers feel can lead to many mistake purchases (I am guilty!!).
If we accept that consumer retail overload is a genuine thing, this means salon retail shelves have to tell clear and concise stories that encourage clients to feel comfortable browsing and purchasing, and this needs to be mirrored on any e-commerce platforms associated with the business.
Heuristics are a fascinating psychological effect we have developed that affects every aspect of life without us being aware of it. The subtle (mental) messages we receive help in our decision making processes and that’s why thinking about what your salon retails and the impact it might have on clients is crucial. Salons have to analyse the brands they have on their shelves, and what clients decide when they see them. if they are the kind of client who likes to research, and these days most generations have embraced a quick google to help with decision making, then they might see the brands on salon shelves and immediately recall that they were seen on the high street with a discount or on an online web-shop with a free gift; when that happens, the salons potential retail success is greatly diminished.
Heuristics and the impact they have has to then become part of the thought process salon have when looking at making retail a sustainable and profitable part of the business. Think about the brands, think about the marketing, the packaging, and most importantly, where are the products available?. Then make a decision about whether or not your retail is the right fit for your business or whether you need to switch to something more in keeping with your vibe, not the high streets.
