In this day and age, it’s very easy to be negative about everything that’s going on in the world of hairdressing. As we all know, negativity breeds negativity, so, I am advocating that instead of focussing on all the doom and gloom stuff, let’s instead GENERATE POSITIVITY.

This world of hairdressing is an absolutely incredible one, filled with creativity, excitement, fun, relationships and of course, a constant stream of innovations and new challenges. Ask anyone who works behind a cash desk, or a call centre phone, or any other ‘job’ that is mundane and repetitive if they have any creativity, excitement, fun, relationships or a constant stream of innovations and new challenges and probably the only one they can say yes to is new challenges, and not in a good way.

Hairdressers and sales representatives and educators eat, sleep and breath creativity, it’s in their DNA, it’s natural for them to be great communicators, hairdressers spend 45 minute or more with one person that puts their trust in them, they know everything there is to know about clients lives outside of the salon doors. Sales guys and educators ooze passion about the brands they represent. There is always a fun vibe in salons, it’s just part of the daily routine, and without doubt there is always excitement about something or other. Hairdressing, and barbering just seem to encapsulate all that’s fabulous about a job.

And then there’s the innovations that keep everyone focussed on learning new techniques, new product information, new ways of communicating with clients, via socials and one-to-one…. it really is never a never ending positive experience.

And yet, there’s still the opportunity for negativity to raise its ugly head. Price increases, mass market manoeuvres from some companies, apprenticeships, VAT, NI contributions, competitor salons, the cost of living, clients googling products, all it takes is to focus in on one niggle and suddenly doom and gloom descends.  So I am saying, instead of getting worried about all the inevitable issues that any business (not just salons) have to face, GENERATE POSITIVITY and share all the good and great aspects with clients and team mates alike.

POSITIVITY BREEDS POSITIVITY, so share it, share it and share it some more. And if there are elements of those negative vibes that are weighing heavy on your mind, deal with them in ways that change your approach.

Business costs can be looked at by increasing prices, clients understands that that’s life. Product issues that are affecting potential in-salon services and retail can be addressed easily by ditching manufacturers who are not truly SALON PROFESSIONAL and finding brands that really are; brands that support and educate salon teams.

Competitors, they are a fact of life, but if you and your team GENERATE POSITIVITY, clients will think twice about leaving your business to go elsewhere. Focus on negativity and they will be off like a rocket 🚀.

It’s just food for thought.
